Customer Review: Entertaining and challenging...

We got this for our oldest son (13) this Christmas. He loved it and spent hours making his own game. Our other sons (10, 8 and 6) became interested. It is a little too challenging for the younger ones, but they can play the games the older ones create. Great to see them working together!

Customer Review: Video Game Tycoon software, 10 year loves it!

My 10 year son saved his money and purchased this software. He went on some web sites to find reviews and didn't have unrealistic expectations. He LOVES it. Its not a high tech game, but it lets him make enough decisions that he does feel like he has created a fun video game. He has a digital blue camcorder and plays RPG(another video game maker software), but he says that Video Game Tycoon is really cool.

Atari Anniversary Edition

Commemorating the 30th anniversary of Atari, this anthology showcases 12 of the greatest arcade games to come from the industry's first bright star. The games are Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Battlezone, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Gravitar, Millipede, Missile Command, Pong, Super Breakout, Tempest, and Warlords. This compilation also includes a collectible Atari sticker, featuring the famous "Fuji" company logo.

Customer Review: Too old for this generation!

I like it but my grandkids only use it once in a Blue Moon...it's just to old for this generation!

Customer Review: Description is wrong

I bought this game solely for Millipede (which it does not have). My attempt to at least have the description corrected by using the feedback form seemed to be ignored so I am leaving this review. Needless to say I am displeased that I a) bought a game that I don't want and the shipping vs. price makes it a moot point to try and return it and b) had to buy a second game (+shipping) to get what I want.

Customer Review: Great Wii Game for any age.

This went under the Christmas tree for our daughter who is 5. She loves it! She cannot read, so the karaokey portion, she actually listens to, and hums. But, she has started to learn the songs, and sing them. She also does the instruments, and does them well. I've also played it, and it is as much fun for me as for her. Of the games we got, this one is one of the top 10. Although, Guitar Hero rates higher for my husband (but he isn't 5).

The Hunt for Red October [Blu-ray]

The Hunt for Red October [Blu-ray]

The Hunt for Red October [Blu-ray]

Before Harrison Ford assumed the mantle of playing Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan hero in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin took a swing at the character in this John McTiernan film and hit one to the fence. If less instantly sympathetic than Ford, Baldwin is in some respects more interesting and nuanced as Ryan, and drawing comparisons between both actors' performances can make for some interesting postmovie discussion. That aside, The Hunt for Red October stands alone as a uniquely exciting adventure with a fantastic costar: Sean Connery as a Russian nuclear submarine captain attempting to defect to the West on his ship. Ryan must figure out his true motives for approaching the U.S. McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard) made an exceptionally handsome movie here with action sequences that really do take one's breath away. --Tom Keogh

Customer Review: The Hunt For Red October [Blu-ray]

BLU-RAY BUYER BEWARE!! The studios are playing us for dupes. In wanting us to buy their movies AGAIN (VHS, LaserDisc, DVD, now Blu-ray), with the expansive information a blu-ray will hold, they are cheating us!! Case in point..THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER (and others). The previous DVD release contained BOTH a Dolby Digital AND the usually preferred DTS track. On the Blu-ray we only get the Dolby. Shame on them!!

It amazes me. You would think they would load these releases with much, much more than the standard DVD release to help get people to switch over to Blu-ray but, for the most part, they're not. I guess they figure they have enough control over people to get away with it. Do they? YOU answer the question.

Customer Review: Great movie!

Excellent movie. I was ecstatic to see that this movie was released to Blu-ray. I can clearly see that they simply didn't simply upscale a standard definition master, but that the film was rescanned and that special features have been added!

My only gripe would be: I would like to see this film get treated like the classic it is. It would be nice to see it get run through a dust buster, or color stabilizer. I don't have a problem with seeing grain, as that in itself has a flawed beauty to it, and does add to the aesthetics of the film.

Overall, it's great! Get it! Now!

Convert any Playstation 2 controller to work with other game systems!

Customer Review: Great product, but only for DualShock 1 (PSOne Joysticks)

I bought it for using my PS2's DualShock 2 on my XBOX. Buttons are too laggy! This is a shame, because this is the third adapter I tried and there's a .25 seconds lag between button press and real action, just like the other ones.

It works great on PS1 Dualshock 1 controllers though.

Customer Review: Product works fantasically

I tested this converter out with the GameCube and Xbox, the PS2 controller works very well with it. When the system boots, your controller will be put into Analog mode, and analog mode cannot be turned off. Which is fine for Xbox and Gamecube. The rumble conversion works wonderfully with the Gamecube, but the Xbox rumble conversion works a tad light, the actual xbox controller shakes harder than the PS2 controller in this conversion (I would rate this converter 5 out of 5 stars if the rumble for Xbox isnt that big of a deal to you). but still i think the rumble is still at a sufficient level. As for the controls, it works beautifully. I tested this out with Halo 2 for Xbox and Resident Evil 0 and 4 for GameCube and the analog (i think) works better than the actual controller meant for each system. This converter is also great because you're playing Halo 2 and Resident Evil games like they should be played. I tryed the Dance Pad on the Xbox (not actually in a dance game, just in the menus but i will rent a DDR game and test it out later and update my review) and the buttons register quickly and sufficiantly, it responds well. Here is the button conversions,

For Xbox:
X is A
Circle is B
Triangle is Y
Square is X
Start is Start
Select is Back
L1 is White
R1 is Black
L2 is Left Trigger
R2 is Right Trigger
Dpad is Dpad
left analog is left analog
right analog is right analog
L3 is left analog stick button
R3 is Right analog stick button

(this layout matches perfectly with the Xbox Eclipse Controller (made by Pelican but some may have GameStop logo on it instead of Pelican's but it is still made by Pelican))

For GameCube:
X is A
Circle is X
Triangle is Y
Square is B
Start is Start/Pause
Select isn't mapped
L1 and R1 both are mapped to Z
L2 is Left Trigger
R2 is Right Trigger
Dpad is Dpad
left analog is analog
right analog is C analog
L3 and R3 aren't mapped

To sum up, this converter works wonderfully, for those who enjoy the PS2 controller, you should definitly order this. I would recommend using the GameStop Chameleon Pro controller for PS2 for best comfort (especially First Person Shooters). Btw, ignore what the other review says, PSone Controllers work fine with this converter as well. If you ask me, the only flaw with this converter is the rumble comes up a tad light for the Xbox (but it still rumbles sufficiently enough).

Nintendo 64 System - Video Game Console

Nintendo 64 System - Video Game Console

Nintendo 64 System - Video Game Console

Nintendo first dabbled in video games during the industry's early years of the mid-'70s. Generations of successful gaming console releases through the years led to the much-hyped 1996 launch of Nintendo 64, a system that represented a giant evolutionary leap in video game technology. Within the first three days of launch, hundreds of thousands of gamers hunkered down with Mario 64, considered by many to be one of the greatest video games ever created. Even today, the system's excellent design continues to host an ever-expanding library of breakthrough games.

Nintendo 64's popularity among younger gamers is no surprise. Well-respected games featuring such long-lived and much-loved personalities as Mario (of arcade classic Donkey Kong fame), Zelda, and Banjo-Kazooie are easy to learn and offer enormous replay value. But times are a' changin' and the system's ever-growing library of titles has expanded into every genre of games imaginable, including games better suited for older gamers. In fact, some of the most acclaimed--in some cases, groundbreaking--games available on any platform today are packed onto N64's old-school cartridges.

Under the system's hood, its appeal to the young certainly didn't produce a less mature gaming machine. On the contrary, the 64-bit system boasts impressive graphics, stereo sound, and numerous accessory enhancements, including a high-resolution pack that boosts graphics to awe-inspiring resolutions.

Start your library with Goldeneye 007, Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, and Star Wars: Episode One Racer--these titles represent a decent start to any N64 cartridge library.

With the recent launch of Sega's Dreamcast system, Nintendo 64 is being left behind as the leader in video game technology. And with newer game systems featuring CD-based games, the system's expensive cartridge format is proving itself an archaic and unconventional storage format. But, at a sub-$110 recommended retail price for a console with two controllers, innovative accessory enhancements and a great library of games keep the system's rabid fan base satisfied, if not eager for Nintendo's next evolutionary step. --Eric Twelker

Customer Review: very poor

the seller sent the 64 a month later with no plugs and no controllers so i never got to play. i sent it back. i am a faithful buyer at amazon and this is the first disappointment of trust. i am scared to order here again.

Customer Review: Nintendo 64: One of the Best Systems Ever Made, Now Discontinued

The Nintendo 64 had a small, yet a great library of games, including the best-selling The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

This console had the best-looking kiosk in retail stores.

But when the Gamecube came out in 2001, that, unfortunately, marked the end of the Nintendo 64. Nintendo published very few games for this system after the Gamecube came out.

The last game that was published for this system was Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, which, if you're lucky, you can still find that game new today at retailers.

I hate it when video game companies discontinue consoles because they released a new one. Look at computer manufacturers like Dell. Sure they make new computers, but you can still buy older models from them (not too old like a 486 computer, though... =D). Unfortunately, video game companies, even today, have failed to recognize this.

Turbo Grafx 16 System - Video Game Console

Turbo Grafx 16 System - Video Game Console

Turbo Grafx 16 System - Video Game Console

The TurboGrafx-16, known as PC Engine in Japan, is a video game console developed by the Nippon Electric Company (NEC) and released in Japan on October 30, 1987, and in North America on August 29, 1989. There was no official PAL version of the system, but a grey importer (Telegames), provided a very limited release in the United Kingdom and continental Europe in 1990 as the Turbografx.[2]

The TurboGrafx-16 had an 8-bit CPU and a 16-bit graphics chip capable of displaying 512 colors at once.

Customer Review: Bonk's Adventure..

NEC's TurboGrafx 16 originally came out in 1989 and was marketed as a "16-Bit" system to compete with the 16-Bit Sega Genesis. The system actually contained an 8-Bit CPU but it had a 16-Bit graphics chip. So pixel quality was on-par with the Genesis.

Of course, during the famous 16-Bit wars between Sega and Nintendo, the TurboGrafx was no competition and the system quickly slid into oblivion. I picked up a brand new TG-16 at my local Toys R Us in 1993 for only $50.

Although the Turbo never could compete with the Genesis or the Super Nintendo, there were still a small handful of fun games released for the system. The Japanese counterpart, PC-Engine, had a very large library of quality games since the system did pretty well in Japan.

Graphics-wise, Turbo games were very colorful as the system could display up to 512 colors. The games also tended to have less slowdown than both the Genesis and SNES.

The one major drawback is that you could only plug one controller into the system. Also, there is no audio-video output. You had to buy special adapters such as the Turbo-tap in order to plug in more controllers for multi-player games.

All the Bonk games, Y's Book, the only home version of Splatterhouse, and a decent amount of fast-paced shoot-em-ups make this a fun choice for enthusiast of the 16-Bit era.

Just install a game steering wheel, such as the latest Logitech model, on the middle pole and attach a couple of pedals along the bottom (all sold separately). The setup is also easily adaptable, with multiple adjustment knobs letting you move the wheel and pedals closer or farther, depending on your height. Appropriate for ages 8 and older, the Evolution seat is the perfect accessory for gamers who want to boost their lap times in style.

Once assembled, it measures 52.1 x 19.7 x 38.6 inches (L x H x W). It's recommended for ages 8 years and older.

Customer Review: This chair is awesome! Worth the money!

This chair is awesome! Took about 20 minutes to setup. Not a bad process. The manual could of been clearer on the instructions.
Once setup I mounted my XBOX steering wheel to it and turned on GRID for the XBOX 360. It takes about 30-60 minutes to really get good with the wheel, but once you do its hard to get out of the chair! Its the only game I have played since getting the chair. I dont want to play anything else. Its like having an arcade in your living room! If your on edge to buy this thing and have a XBOX 360, GRID and some money...I would definitely pick it up! You wont regret it. I like that it folds up for easy storage too so my Girlfriend doesnt have to look at it!

Customer Review: Flight Simulator Modification

I was looking at seats to construct a home flight simulator. After looking at cost of seats alone, my wife recommended that I look at gaming seats. An Amazon search found the Playseat Evolution...excellent idea.

The seat works great with the Playseats Gearshift Holder Mount on the left side to hold the throttle and the center post for the control stick. Flight controls are the Thrustmaster Hotas also here on Amazon. When I get rudder pedals, they will sit perfectly on the metal foot rest.

I plan to purchase the seat slider and an additional gear shift mount for a keypad on the right side. Recommend purchasing any accessories with the chair since the chair needs to be disassembled to install the additional equipment.

The chair system is designed for car controls but the kit came with zip ties and self-adhesive Velcro so modifying it for flight controls was very easy and with no additional cost since all hardware was provided.
Just look at the cost of other home flight simulators and this is the way to go. You can order all the parts from Amazon. Sign up for Amazon Prime and get them in two days.

Great product.

Microsoft Xbox K07-00001 RF ADAPTER FOR XBOX VIDEO GAME

The Xbox RF adapter connects the Xbox console to TVs that do not have audio and video connections. It operates on VHF channel three or four (switch selectable). This product is exclusively for use with the Xbox system.

Customer Review: RF adapter for X-Box

This thing works! The cord has enough length that I can use it in any entertainment center. What else can you say about it? It works so I give it five out of five.

Customer Review: WHO THE HELL NEEDS THIS PIECE OF CRAP ANYWAY???!!!

In the age of HDTVs and progessive scan DVD players, I definately would NOT recommend this product to be the ideal type of hook-up for your XBOX.

All of the people in here who are telling you that they're getting a GOOD picture quality from this product are just fooling you left and right... Don't be stupid.
Anybody who knows ANYTHING at all about basic electronics at all can tell you that an RF signal causes radio frequency interference; which means these HUGE red and blue diagonal bars that constantly run all over your screen.
Also, because of the fact that you'll be recieving both video and audio signals through the same channel, you'll be getting lots of noise interference (snow) as well.
If you don't get what I mean, then just have someone run the radio, blowdryer, or vacuum cleaner in the house while you're playing your XBOX with these.
And you can just FORGET about Dolby Digital or DTS; for this device not only degrades your picture quality but it also takes away stereo/surround sound and gives you MONO instead, which of course would sound TERRIBLE for XBOX games.

Is THAT really what you want?

Customer Review: Great deal for the price

I actually have the guides and the pokedex for Diamond/Pearl, but I like to buy guides because the vast information in Pokemon games can be daunting and index, tables, and extra descriptions can be helpful not to mention the book are pretty to look at. Although I can find most information online, I like having the books right there while I am playing, instead of going back and forth online.

The only thing I didn't like with this book is that the paper quality chosen for this version is not the glossy kind unlike the previous versions. It is a thin matte paper that is probably chosen because of budget reasons? I dunno, but usually that is one thing I love about game guides, the quality prints on quality pages.

The content however has incorporated all the new changes and extra content that Platinum has to offer. Although I havent used the entire walkthrough since I have not finished Platinum just yet, I have already found some typos or some missing info. Like example, the power Leech Seed was missing from the Battle Moves List. There are probably some other minor typos or missing info like that, but the guide is still very helpful just as the Diamond/Pearl versions.

So for the price, Game guide + Pokedex, you can't go wrong with this deal.

*Edit: I just found out while playing tonite that the Battle moves orders have changed a bit in Platinum. Some Battle moves can be be attained at a different level than Diamond/Pearl gameplay.

Customer Review: Guide for beginners, But that is it

This 624 page guide is very informitave and great for beginners. This review is coming from someone who has played pokemon games for years and is on the compettive scene. here are my thoughts:

Props:
Great cover, informative on how to play the main game, decent post-game info, great cost for the product

Slops:
Poor paper and image quality, does not give all the info about every pokemon.

So if you play this game for fun or is for a new pokemon player, i HIGHLY recomend buying this.
if it is for someone who plays Pokemon on a regular basis, i would not bother.

Hope this helps everyone out there

Customer Review: Your best Hope to 100% completion

I'm a perfectionist when it comes to playing RPG's, I want to find every nook and cranny, every upgrade, and every secret I can without missing one bit.
So as I entered Star Ocean the Last Hope, I decided to purchase and use this guide, and believe me, it was not a mistake.

Over the years I've used guides, some were well laid out and easy to use, while others were confusing dictionaries that require you to use the index every few seconds.
This guide is fantastic, everything is laid out in the order of which you encounter events within the game. From Private Actions, to Item Creation, you always know what's coming up, what you can do with what item, and you won't waste any of your time running around in circles when you want to know what to do next.

I recommend this product for those that would like to perfect this game, though it does spoil a couple of parts of the story line if you read ahead of the point you are at. A suggestion would be to only read as far as you have progressed, that way you won't spoil the story line for yourself.

All in all, a fantastic guide of the highest quality.

Customer Review: A must own if you like the game or want to beat the game!

RPGs are a tricky thing. They are really fun to play, but often leave you out in the cold when you're not sure where to go. The internet helps to a certain degree, but it's hard to find the exact spot you were on and it doesn't contain all the information you want. This guide does! Oh my does it!

I wanted an RPG that I could really get into. I found it in Star Ocean. The only problem was that I kept getting stuck not knowing where to go. This guide gives you step by step instructions on where to go and what to do. It's impossible to get lost. This book also tells you when a pivotal moment is about to come up in the game that if you miss, you'll miss for good. These moments are the ones that shape your affinity with other characters. Knowing where one is or if I missed one and can go back to get it, is worth the price of the guide.

I highly recommend this product if you bought the game and plan on finishing it. It's great for before bed reading too!

The black/grey skin looks good and shipped fast. The trade-offs are that the skin is thinner and the material allows for a better grip than the OEM, but is not as cushioned.

Customer Review: Not Worth the Full Price

I didn't pay for this book. Instead, I got it for free because of a special deal Amazon was offering. As a free book, I have no problems with the Spore guide. It offers a few details and insights not found in the game hints, and also has a lot of examples of different types of creatures for the creatively-challenged.

That said, this guide is not worth the full price. The majority of the content IS simply a repeat of the game hints that come automatically turned on with the game. If you get it for free or a couple bucks, then pick it up. Otherwise, don't bother.

Customer Review: Handy Reference but could use better visuals

I've found the guide to be a very handy reference when I need a quick explanation of something. It could use some better visuals when describing certain functions, such as the terraforming panels, etc.

Overall, it's good to have it around so you don't get lost. It's definately not a walkthrough guide, but a pretty good reference.

Customer Review: You never have too many gadgets

This little keyboard is great. I sit on the couch with a big grin on my face because I no longer have to hang out right in front of the tv with a big unwieldy cordless keyboard and mouse. I find the touch pad to be as easy to use as that on any laptop. I love being able to move
the cursor and type with one device. It is very small, but I find it easy to type on. For those used to typing on qwerty keyboards on cell phones, this will feel huge.I am never going to use it to write papers or type long emails, but it's perfect for light browsing and media control.

I have the diNovo mini connected to an HTPC running Windows Media Center. It was simple to set up and I love the built in storage for the bluetooth dongle. It controls Media Center well, although I will still use my Logitech Harmony 880 for remote functions. I needed a keyboard to run iTunes and to use MyMovies. The diNovo fits the bill perfectly. So far, it is exactly what I was looking for, but I did a lot of research prior to purchasing so I knew what to expect.

I've only had it for a couple of days, but I have no negatives so far...

Customer Review: Excellent Addition to my Entertainment PC

I have an "entertainment PC" set up in the basement. It's a DVR/PVR and movie player. It's hooked up to a projector as well. Having this remote keyboard/mouse makes it really easy and fun to control. No more climbing behind the screen to move the mouse! I just plugged the small USB dongle into my computer and within seconds I was moving the mouse around. You only need to install the included software if you want to tweak things like acceleration and cursor speed. The only thing I am disappointed with is the fact that you can't charge it using a USB cable. I recommend this to anyone with an entertainment PC.

Pros:
- Just plug in the dongle and it's up and working. You only need the software to tweak the settings.
- USB plug (dongle) stores in the unit.
- Charge lasts a long time.
- Very cool looking. Lights are nice.
- Easy and fun to use.
- Don't need blue tooth on your PC. This comes with it.

Cons:
- Doesn't Charge through USB or a cradle. Needs the power adapter and cord.
- Switch to change to PS3 mode is hard to get to.

Customer Review: Not worth the money - boardline rip-off

It was very disappointing. My son is a huge fan of Ben Ten and Hyperscan makes a Ben Ten game. The game comes with scanner cards to be scanned in at various points in the game. However, they include only 6 and there are more to be purchased seperately. Although they tell you that the game can be played and completed with the cards included, during the game they tell you to scan in the cards you don't have. My son felt cheated by this.
The game does not have good control so you really need good coordination to make it work smoothly - even adults have had trouble.

Save your money for a PS2!

BATMAN THE VIDEO GAME

BATMAN THE VIDEO GAME

BATMAN THE VIDEO GAME

This listing is for a Nes Video Game Version. Batman the Video game. Storyline: The citizens of GOTHAM CITY are busy planning the city's 200th Anniversary Festival, but there is not much to celebrate. Crime and violence rule the city. The only man who can free the city from THE JOKER'S evil clutches is the one and only - BATMAN! With your help, the CAPED CRUSADER can defeat THE JOKER and save the good people of GOTHAM CITY. BATMAN is armed with special weapons and acrobatic strength. He must destroy 15 different types of enemies and 5 bosses, while traveling through 5 stages. Finally, BATMAN comes face-to-face with THE JOKER! But who will prevail? It's up to you! --From the NES Batman instruction manual. Overview: Batman is based loosely on the Michael Keaton/Jack Nicholson movie. Batman is out to stop the Joker from terrorizing Gotham City. There are some cinema scenes between levels, that show the Batmobile driving around or confrontations with the Joker. The cut-scenes have nice graphics to look at. The in-game graphics are good, too. There are some quotes from the movie included, and much of the scenery came right from the movie, too, such as the Axis Chemical Plant, and Batman's final showdown against the Joker in the clock tower. The sounds were also reminiscent of the movie. The controls were a little tricky at first, but easy to use once you get used to them. The ability to make Batman jump off the walls was a really fun feature. This platformer based on the movie was definitely an exception to the rule that all games based on movies are crappy.

Retro Duo Twin Video Game System NES & SNES - White

Have you been dying to play your old NES or Super Nintendo games once again? Perhaps you can't find your system, maybe you have the system, but need all the cables to hook it up, or maybe you are just sick and tired of the *$@! thing never working properly?! With this brand new, top-loading system, you can play all of your favorite Nintendo AND Super Nintendo games once again on the same console, and the best part is, they will work every time!

Microsoft Xbox AV Pack Advanced - Game console link cable - S-Video / composite video / audio - 4 pin mini-DIN, RCA, TOSLINK (F) - Xbox AV connector (M) - black

This Xbox AV pack allows integration between the Xbox video game system and TVs or receivers that utilize optical digital audio input for Dolby Digital playback, as well as S-video input.

Customer Review: Great Item

This is a must with today's new flat panel TVs. The old cable that came with the XBox made the picture all fuzzy. This new adapter provides a crystal clear picture.

Customer Review: Upgrade AV outputs of your Xbox

I bought this primarly for the optical audio output. I've set up the XBMC for digital output, now I can stream dolby digital and DTS. No longer need my DVD player. Sound is great compared the the rca output, specially when using DTS. The bonus part is the s-video, although there is not much improvement over rca video cable, the image seams to have more contrast and sharper.

Sega CD System - Video Game Console

Sega CD System - Video Game Console

Sega CD System - Video Game Console

First CD video game system by SEGA.

Customer Review: Poor guy never got a chance. :(

While I can't stand the way Sega killed off their console marketshare with shoddy peripherals like the Sega 32x, I can't really berate the Sega CD. In all fairness, CD attachments were expected to be quite fashionable at the time-- The Turbo GrafX 16 and Atari Jaguar had them, and Nintendo was working with Sony to develop one for Super NES (which would later be released alone as the Playstation after Nintendo pulled out of the partnership). Then of course you had the Phillips CDI and a few other random CD-related doo-dads that never caught on. The CD age was coming, and everyone wanted to get their foot in the door early.

Unfortunately, customers didn't want to pay extra to access games on a system they already owned. The CD technology wasn't quite ready, offering slow loading periods and poor video quality. 64 colors on an image 1/4 the size of the screen didn't exactly feel "high tech" when even a crappy VHS cassette would have looked better. The massive storage, superior audio, and cool mode 7 effects were great additions to the Genesis's power, but unfortunately most American developers only used the Sega CD to unleash upgraded ports of games already found on the Genesis, because Sega sadly did not have enough dev kits to go around.

The system does have it's fare share of gems. Sonic CD, Snatcher, and Popful Mail are some of the system's brightest highlights, and then you've got a bunch of decent ports of old PC games. Sonic CD is probably the most notable though, because it's considered by many to be the best Sonic game ever made (it is also availible in the Sonic Gems collection for Gamecube and Japanese / PAL PS2, but the harcore player will always choose the original). If you find a Sega CD for a decent price, there's really not much excuse not to pick one up. How much you're willing to spend, is up to you. Considering this thing cost $300 when it came out, $25 at a yard sale is a steal.

Customer Review: Never reached it's potential...

I purchased my original front-loading Sega CD system the day it was released back in 1992. I had high hopes for this expensive ($300) Genesis add-on. The original Sega CD system was packed with a total of 7 games: A 5-in-1 Genesis compilation CD, the CD edition of Renovation's Sol-Feace, and a full-motion video Sherlock Holmes mystery game. Being packed with so many games seemed to justify the high price tag, especially considering that game cartridges routinely sold for around $60.00 at this time.

More than doubling the processing power of the Genesis, the onboard processor of the Sega CD ran at 12.5 MHz. It included hardware for scaling and rotation and a very nice 16-bit sound processor. Combined with the Genesis, this was a very formidable system for its day.

There were three categories of games available on the Sega CD: Full-motion video (FMV), enhanced genesis titles, and original (non-FMV) titles. The original titles were my favorites. These were games designed from the ground up to utilize the added processing power and storage the Sega CD offered. The result was higher resolutions, smoother animations and more detailed graphics (be sure to check out the images I uploaded!). Sonic CD is a great example of an original Sega CD title.

The enhanced Genesis titles were basically Genesis games with enhanced sound, thanks to the redbook CD audio and 16-bit sound processor. Some of these titles included animated cinemas as well. Otherwise, you were still playing a Genesis game. As an owner of a Sega CD system, I felt that when a certain game was released on BOTH cartridge and CD, I had to buy the CD version. The problem is that most Genesis games were not ported over to CD. So I found myself holding off for months for a CD version that would never come out. This must've had an impact on cartridge sales.

As for the full-motion video titles, this has become the stigma of the Sega CD system; there were way too many of these crappy games. Basically, these are nothing more than cheesy, pixilated movies with bad acting. The game player is given cues every so often, to control the direction of the video; you're not actually controlling the action. The only FMV games I liked on the Sega CD were the animated ones like Dragon's Lair, Road Avenger and Time Gal. These were a different breed than the Night Traps, Corpse Killers, etc.

For those pondering the purchase of a used Sega CD unit, by all means pick one up. There are certainly enough quality (non-FMV) titles available to justify the cost of a used unit. Several of these titles are among the greatest 16-bit games ever created; if you are a collector, you must own these. Here are the titles that should be considered: Sonic CD, Flink, Mickey Mania, Wonderdog, Chuck Rock 2, Ecco 1 & 2, The Terminator, Robo Aleste, Final Fight CD, Formula One World Championship, Lunar: The Silver Star, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Snatcher, Batman Returns, Eternal Champions, AH3 Thunderstrike, Earthworm Jim SE, Silpheed and Shining Force CD
